Growing up in the Hollywood spotlight can’t be easy. During your most formative years, you’ve got cameras in your face, gossip columns critiquing your every move, and social media trolls dissecting your appearance (despite the fact that you haven’t even reached age 18). No, it’s definitely not easy to be a child star — especially if you want to transition into an adult powerhouse — but Selena Gomez seems to be one of the rare cases who has taken on the challenge and succeeded.
She got started when she was a very little girl, made her way up the Disney ranks, and blossomed into an interesting Hollywood character and talented singer as an adult. Her journey wasn’t without its challenges, but it’s safe to say that Gomez has officially secured herself a spot at the table of Hollywood millennials. Looking at the photos below, you won’t believe how much she’s changed over the years.
Do you recognize this celebrity?
We’ll give you a hint: She started off as a Disney star, and has now transitioned into a successful music career. She’s also BFF with Taylor Swift.
You guessed it: It’s Selena Gomez.
She was an adorable little girl, is now a beautiful woman, and has spent most of her life in front of the camera in some capacity or another.
Many don’t know that she actually got her start on the Barney show.
That’s right: Before Gomez was a Disney star, she was singing the “I Love You, You Love Me” song with everyone’s favorite purple dinosaur.
She was also rocking some serious fashions.
Even back on the Barney shows, homegirl knew how to dress herself.
Seriously, how cute is this kid?
Over time she made appearances in Spy Kids, as well as The Suite Life With Zack & Cody.
As she got older she made more appearances on other shows.
She was charismatic, adorable, and knew how to deliver comedic dialogue — in other word’s, she’s the perfect child star.
Her talent is what earned her a role on Wizards of Waverly Place
The show began in 2007, and she was cast after impressing Disney execs with a cameo on another hit show, Hannah Montana.
Gomez was cast in the lead role as Alex Russo.
Upon receiving the role, Gomez and her mother moved to Hollywood so Gomez could go to school and work full-time.
Back then, Gomez was about as wholesome as one could be.
Her image was that of the girl-next-door, the funny friend with a charming smile that could always win you over.
But a lot of time has passed.
Now, Gomez is all grown up.
Some say that her breakup with Justin Bieber in 2011 is what really triggered her to come into her own.
After that, she simply wasn’t the girl-next-door anymore, or just “Bieber’s girlfriend.” She was becoming a star in her own right.
And you won’t believe how different she looks now.
Everyone has to grow up sometime, but it just so happens that some people do it just a tad more gracefully than the rest of us.
Here she is recently.
We’re loving her new, grown-up look. But it hasn’t come without it’s share of struggles.
At one point, there were serious rifts between Gomez and her family.
She ended up having to fire her mom and her stepfather, who basically managed her entire career since she was young. The details are blurry, but most agree that it was so she could make a more adult transition into music.
She also had her share of health problems.
At one point, she checked into a rehab facility — many thought it was due to drugs, but it was actually restorative rehab after learning that she had lupus.
